Description Kortasafn Abrahams Orteliusar, Theatrum orbis terrarum, var dýr bók í stóru broti og frekar óþjál í meðförum. Þegar Ortelius lést árið 1598 komst útgáfurétturinn á safni hans í hendur Johannesar Vrients. Hann lét prenta smækkaða gerð þess undir nafninu Epitome Theatri Orteliani sem aðrir höfðu í rauninni byrjað að gefa út áður. Kortið er úr einni slíkri útgáfu, það er ekkert annað en smækkuð útgáfa af Íslandskorti Orteliusar. Ýmsu hefur orðið að fórna við þessa breytingu á stærð, eins og t. d. mörgum örnefnum og öllum fyrirbærunum á hafinu.
The atlas, Theatrum orbis terrarum, by Abraham Ortelius was a large book and rather expensive. So it was not very long before someone started making it more accessible to the public by reducing the maps. This new version of the collection, called Epitome, was published in many languages. Here we see a map from an edition of the Epitome by Johannes Vrients. The change in size has claimed many of the place-names and all the creatures in the sea.
